Dental implants are artificial tooth roots. A dental implant functions the same way as the patients’ own root, since it directly fuses with the bone. Implants anchor dentures, e.g. bridges, crowns or removable dentures securely to the bone.

As a result of an advanced cavity, necrosis of nerve tissue inside the tooth might occur. This way bacteria could get deep into the root canal. Germs could enter the bone and cause a painful inflammation. The treatment of choice in such cases is the attempt of preserving tooth by means of a root canal treatment. For this procedure, the root canals are cleaned. then mechanically extended and after the inflammation has disappeared it will be tightly filled with a plastic material. This usually concludes the treatment.

In a few cases, the inflammation reappears. This is often due to bacteria that remained in small side channels at the root tip, that multiplied and then again passed into the bone. These bacteria can’t be reached by the dentist via an opening in the center of the crown. Therefore, as a further attempt of preserving the tooth, only a tooth root resection will be successful. In this procedure, in a minor surgical procedure the inflammation within the root tip is "cleared"  and the root tip will be shortened by about 3 mm.

As a further step the lower channel portion will be cleaned again from the  back and densely closed up with filling material (for example, Super-EBA ®, MTA ®). The resulting bone cavity, created by the inflammation and surgery, will completely disappear after a while by newly formed bone.
